3 Steps That Helped Me Commit To A Task
If you’re anything like me, you’re at your desk, you take out a pen, a notebook, and a laptop. You’ve made up your mind to finish writing a post. You’re optimistic. You’re smiling from ear to ear. You enthusiastically start writing and then – NOTHING! Argh!
I started writing over 6 blog posts – yet completed none. I was becoming frustrated and anxious. Why couldn’t I complete a post? I had zeal, aspiration, AND a deadline. Yet, I ended up going to bed defeated and deflated. So, I thought why not write a post about commitment and commit myself to completing it.
Here are 3 steps that worked for me.
1. Committing to a task can open doors of favour or opportunities
When I decided to commit to completing this blog post, I initially doubted whether I would follow through since I had failed miserably in the past. However, I remembered what happened when I took the steps to bring my blogging dream into reality.
As soon as I stepped outside of my comfort zone and made a commitment to walk the walk instead of talking the talk, countless courses were readily available – free of charge – courses which would have normally cost me over £1000 and with teachers that gave me various tips and tricks that helped me along the way.
In the words of William H Murray ‘… the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred…’
Because I experienced this, I thought about what could happen if I completed this post, hmm…
2. I wrote down ‘why’ I wanted to complete the task
One thing I love – is researching. So, when I decided to commit to writing a post on commitment, you guessed it, I was like a duck to water searching the web and scanning books. Bear in mind, I had a deadline to stick to, so I did what I could in the little time I had.
Whilst researching, I came across an article, by Jari Roome. He said for you to remain committed to a task, you must acknowledge the ‘why’. What are the pros of completing a task and cons if you didn’t?
Typically, I would read this info, get pumped up and then move on to something else that took my fancy, but I wanted results. One of my main reasons for starting this blog was to test things out to see if they work, so I was prepared to follow it through.
I wrote down the reasons why completing this post would benefit me:
- It would give me a sense of achievement.
- It would encourage and motivate me to complete more posts in the future.
- It would allow me to launch my blog to the world.
Seeing this on paper, spurred me on to work diligently. Knowing the whys kept me focused no matter what stumbling blocks were in my way.
3. Saying No!
Normally, if my mobile rings, I’d answer it. Or, if there is a program or movie that had just been released on Netflix or Disney +, I’d watch it. However, I had to say No. No – to long phone calls, and even though Disney + just released a movie that I’d been waiting months to watch, I had to say no to that too.
Not only had I committed to this task, but I also was redecorating. Yes, I know! Why would I put myself under all this pressure when I have a deadline looming? I asked myself this question too. But I made a promise to my daughter, and I knew that it would make her happy and content, and in turn, give me more time to complete these posts.
Another area where I needed to say NO was sleep. I knew that it would only be for a time, and once I jumped over this hurdle, I could go to bed at a reasonable hour. Until then, it would have to be under 5 hours sleep. You gotta do what you gotta do!
Conclusion
I hear you asking! Did you complete this task and was this the first post you completed? Yes, and yes 😉.
Committing to this task not only helped me find a way to finish this post in a few days, but it also built up my confidence. By writing down ‘why’ it would benefit me and saying no, I was able to go from a blank page to a completed post.
What tasks are you struggling to commit to?
Try out these three steps and let me know how you get on. When it comes to sleeping, you could wake up an hour earlier or go to bed an hour later.
Stay blessed and don’t be afraid – take those steps!
